Byron Scott NBA Coach of the Year

Posted by Eric Engberg on April 28, 2008

It is being reported that Byron Scott will be named the NBA’s Coach of the Year. This seems like the right selection to me.  Scott guided the Hornets to the #2 seed in the West despite not having superior overall talent in comparison to teams like LA, San Antonio, and Phoenix.  New Orleans is, by-and-large, Chris Paul and a collection solid role players and they still managed to slide into the #2 spot.

Rick Adelman would be my runner up for the COY honor.  The fact that Houston still managed to tie for the 4th best record in the West is pretty remarkable given that the Rockets were without Yao Ming’s services for the last couple of months of the season.  Adelman held his team together when the big man went down and the Rockets still managed to run off 10 straight wins after the injury.

The only other coach in contention, in my mind, would have been Doc Rivers and I have qualms about giving it to him as the voters would basically be rewarding him for not screwing it up.  Everyone was predicting the Celtics to win 60 plus games in a conference where a team is lucky to have at least one elite player let alone three.
